High crime rate is one of the largest concerns in Jamaica. Traditionally, the country has had a very high murder rate; higher than larger countries such as, Guatemala, Venezuela, Belize, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and even the United States. In fact, it had the highest murder rate in the world in 2004 and 2005. Another major problem of our country is drug trafficking, with cocaine and marijuana being the most prominent drugs.

The health of Jamaica’s social and economic
structure has drastically been impacted by the deportees. Not much has been accomplished to monitor and contain them and their activities. They are classified as criminals roaming the country who have been trained abroad in techniques in criminal behavior that local police are not even familiar with. According to local police sources, deportees in Jamaica have been involved in over 600 murders, 1,700 armed robberies and 150 shoot-outs. They are the central focus of criminal gangs operating in Jamaica.

Employment is a scarce commodity in Jamaica. Considering the economic crisis in the world, it is very likely that more people will be joining the unemployment line, making this situation even worse back home. We have learned that recently that over 600 individuals showed to apply for 10 vacant positions at one business.

With all of this being said, we know that the only answer to these challenging times is God. The Bible reminds us in 2 Chronicles 7:14, "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." If there is a time that we need God's intervention to change the heart of the people and the perspective of the country, it is right now.

We are reminded that prayer changes things. Although we are currently not residing there, we are still Jamaicans born and bred and we feel the pain for our beloved country. We are encouraging all Jamaicans and those who love Jamaica to join us and saturate heaven with our prayers on August 22, 2009 at 7:00p.m. for this great nation
